What is Brave Education?

Brave Education is a complete family of programmes covering ages 0 to 20+. Brave Roots is our early years programme (ages 0-5). Brave Wings is our primary curriculum (ages 5-11). Brave Generation Academy covers secondary education (ages 11-16), and Brave Pathways offers university-level degrees from age 16. All four share the same philosophy: education should be flexible, learner-centred, and built around genuine curiosity -- not around systems designed for a different era.

What age groups do you cover?

Brave Roots covers ages 0-5, Brave Wings ages 5-11, Brave Generation Academy ages 11-16 (with IGCSEs, A-Levels, and an American diploma), and Brave Pathways takes learners from 16 into accredited university degrees. You can enter at any stage -- you don't have to start from Year 1 or age 0.

How is this different from other homeschool curricula?

Most curricula replicate school at home -- isolated subjects, worksheets, tests, a rigid timetable. Brave Wings is built differently. Every week is organised around a single Big Question that connects science, maths, literacy, art, and character development into a coherent theme. It's based on phenomenon-based learning (the Finnish model) and Singapore CPA maths -- two of the most evidence-backed approaches in education. It's also genuinely beautiful -- designed to make learning feel like an adventure, not a chore.

Do I need any teaching experience?

None at all. Every week is written so that any parent can pick it up and follow it -- even if you've never taught before and feel nervous about it. The lesson plans include clear instructions, a materials list, "If Stuck" tips, and ideas for extending learning if your child flies through it. If you can have a conversation with your child, you can do this.

What materials or resources do I need?

Very little. Each week includes a Prep Box that lists exactly what you need -- and the vast majority are everyday household items: paper, pens, kitchen ingredients, things collected on a walk. Occasionally you might want something specific (a magnifying glass, a simple thermometer), but we never require expensive equipment. A table, some curiosity, and a little time are your most important resources.

What does a typical Brave Roots week look like?

Each week has a daily activity -- usually 15-30 minutes -- that targets one of the five SEL pillars: attachment, curiosity, identity, social connection, and confidence. A week might include a sensory discovery tray on Monday, a nature walk on Tuesday, a conversation about identity on Wednesday, a sharing game on Thursday, and a gentle physical challenge on Friday. Everything is explained clearly, and there's never any pressure to complete every day perfectly.

Is Brave Roots based on real research?

Yes. Brave Roots is grounded in the Harvard Center on the Developing Child's research on early brain development and the science of learning -- particularly the evidence on serve-and-return interaction, executive function, and the critical importance of the first five years. The five SEL pillars are drawn from developmental psychology and early childhood education research. We also draw on attachment theory, Reggio Emilia principles, and Forest School philosophy.

Can childminders and nurseries use Brave Roots?

Absolutely -- and many do. Brave Roots is ideal for childminders, nurseries, playgroups, and home daycare settings. The Schools & Groups plan ($249/year for up to 10 children) covers group use. The activities are designed to work in small groups as well as one-on-one, and they fit naturally into an early years setting routine. What subjects does Brave Wings cover?

Science, maths, literacy (reading, writing, spelling, speaking), history, geography, art, music, and character development -- all woven together through each week's theme. Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, Brave Wings connects them through a single Big Question each week. Maths follows the Singapore CPA approach. Character development is embedded through the six Brave virtues, not bolted on as a separate subject.

How does the weekly structure work?

Each week follows a five-day rhythm: Monday is Enquiry Day (exploring the week's Big Question through hands-on investigation), Tuesday is Quest Day (the creative project that runs across the four-week theme), Wednesday is Maths Focus, Thursday is Literacy Focus, and Friday is Discovery Day (child-led exploration, nature, or free project time). The Kitchen Table Chat -- a guided family conversation -- fits in whenever suits you. Each day takes roughly 2-3 hours.

What are Quests?

Every four-week theme includes a Quest -- a creative, hands-on project that brings the whole theme together. Quests are the things children remember for years: building a shadow puppet theatre, designing a seed dispersal machine, creating a stop-motion animation, writing and performing a play. They develop problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and perseverance in a way that no worksheet ever could. Tuesday of each week is dedicated to Quest work.

Does it align with the UK National Curriculum?

Yes. Brave Wings is aligned to the UK National Curriculum (England), the Welsh Four Purposes framework, and is consistent with Cambridge Primary. Curriculum alignment documents are available on request for families who need them for regulatory purposes, school transitions, or group settings.

Can I use this alongside other curricula?

Yes. Some families use Brave Wings as their complete curriculum -- it covers everything. Others use it as the main framework but supplement with a separate phonics programme, or swap our maths out for something they already use. It's modular enough to integrate. The only thing we'd caution is trying to run two full curricula side by side -- that's usually more stressful than helpful.

What qualifications can my child get?

Brave Generation Academy offers three qualification pathways: the British pathway (IGCSEs and A-Levels, accredited by Pearson Edexcel), the American pathway (an internationally recognised diploma with AP credits, in partnership with Forward International Academy), and the Portuguese pathway (for families connected to the Portuguese education system). Beyond secondary, Brave Pathways offers accredited university degrees in Business, Computing, Sports, and Hospitality.

What's the difference between the British, American, and Portuguese pathways?

The British pathway (IGCSEs and A-Levels) is exam-based and internationally recognised -- ideal for families planning university in the UK, Australia, Europe, or Asia. The American pathway is credit-based with no high-stakes exams -- qualifications are built through coursework and an extensive elective catalogue, including AP credits. It's the strongest route for US or Canadian university, and for learners who thrive with continuous assessment rather than exam pressure. The Portuguese pathway serves families connected to the Portuguese education system. BGA is one of the few providers that genuinely offers all three.

What are Learning Hubs?

Learning Hubs are BGA's physical locations -- small, community-based centres where learners can study alongside peers, attend workshops, and access in-person coaching. They combine the flexibility of online learning with the community and structure of a school environment. BGA currently has Learning Hubs in several locations, including Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand. Online learning is available worldwide for learners who don't have a nearby Hub.

There's no entrance exam -- BGA assesses each applicant individually to find the right pathway and starting point. Brave Wings Year 1 is completely free -- all 36 weeks of complete lesson plans, for as long as you like. No credit card, no trial period, no catch. That's a full year of primary education covering science, maths, literacy, and character development across nine four-week themes. We also have free demo weeks for Brave Roots, Brave Wings (primary), and Brave Generation (secondary) so you can see what each stage looks like before committing.

On top of that, the Demos page has complete sample weeks for each stage (Early Years, Primary, and Secondary), so you can see exactly what the content looks and feels like. How do school and group licences work?

The Schools & Groups plan covers up to 10 children for $249 per year -- that works out from $24.90 per child. Is there a refund policy?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you're not happy within the first 30 days, we'll refund you in full -- no questions asked. After 30 days, subscriptions run to the end of the billing period. We believe in the curriculum and we'd rather you felt safe to try it than stayed away out of fear of being stuck with something that doesn't work for your family.

Can I do this if I work full-time?

Home education doesn't have to mean a parent at home full-time. Many Brave Wings families have one working parent and one part-time -- and some use Brave Wings within childcare or co-op settings where a caregiver follows the plans. The 2-3 hours of structured learning per day can often be arranged around work schedules, especially for younger children. The Friday Discovery Day is specifically designed for self-directed, less-supervised learning. It's also worth knowing that children learning at home often progress faster than in school, so the hours add up differently than you'd expect.

What about socialisation?

This comes up a lot, and it's a fair question -- but most families find it's not the issue they feared. Homeschooled children typically socialise plenty through sports, arts, community groups, co-ops, and friend networks. Many Brave Wings families connect with other local families and follow the curriculum together in small groups -- the Group Mode activities are specifically designed for this. Brave Generation Academy Learning Hubs also offer a community of peers for secondary-age learners. Socialisation is a skill you practise, not a place you attend.

Will my child be able to transition to traditional school later?

Yes. The curriculum covers all core subject areas at the expected depth, and alignment to the UK National Curriculum means the content maps clearly to school year groups. Many families find their children are actually ahead of their peers when they do transition -- particularly in independent thinking, curiosity, and creative problem-solving. Children can enter Brave Wings mid-journey and return to traditional school at any point. We'd always recommend checking in with the receiving school about their assessment process.
