Singapore Maths Explained for Parents (No Maths Degree Required)

If you've looked into homeschool maths, you've probably heard of Singapore Maths. It's the approach that took Singapore from average to number one in global maths rankings in a single generation. But what actually is it, and can you really teach it at home?

The core idea: CPA.

Singapore Maths follows three stages — Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract. Every concept starts with real objects (blocks, counters, beans), moves to pictures and diagrams, and only then reaches written numbers and symbols. The point is that children understand what maths means before they learn to write it down.

An example.

Teaching 3 + 4: First, your child puts three beans in one group and four in another, then pushes them together and counts. That's concrete. Next, they draw three dots and four dots and circle all of them. That's pictorial. Finally, they write 3 + 4 = 7. That's abstract. By the time they write the sum, they know in their bones what it means.

Why this matters.

Traditional maths teaching often jumps straight to abstract — memorise the formula, practise it 50 times. Children can pass tests this way, but they don't understand maths. CPA-taught children understand the structure underneath, so they can figure out new problems because they grasp what's actually happening.

Can you teach this at home?

Yes — and it's easier than traditional maths because you don't need to be good at maths yourself. You need blocks, counters, or beans. Paper and pencils. And a curriculum that tells you what to do each week. That's exactly what Brave Wings provides — every week's maths section follows the CPA approach with clear instructions for each stage.
