So You're Thinking About Homeschooling — Here's What You Actually Need to Know

The decision to homeschool is rarely instant. It usually starts with a feeling — something isn't right at school, your child is unhappy, or you've glimpsed a different way of learning and can't un-see it. Whatever brought you here, welcome. You're not alone, and it's not as hard as you think.

You don't need to be a teacher.

This is the biggest myth in homeschooling. You don't need a teaching qualification, a degree in education, or even a particularly tidy house. What you need is time, patience, and a willingness to learn alongside your child. If you can read a recipe, you can follow a lesson plan.

You don't need to replicate school.

The kitchen table is not a classroom and it shouldn't try to be. You don't need a whiteboard, a bell schedule, or 6 hours of desk time. Most homeschooling families find that 2–3 hours of focused learning per day covers more ground than a full school day — because there's no waiting for 29 other children to catch up, no transitions between rooms, and no time lost to behaviour management.

You do need some structure.

Complete unschooling works for some families, but most children (and parents) do better with a rhythm. Not a rigid timetable — a rhythm. A predictable shape to the week that everyone can rely on. This is exactly what Brave Wings provides: a Monday-to-Friday structure that's flexible enough to bend around your life but solid enough to give your child consistency.

What about socialisation?

Every homeschooler hears this question. The honest answer: homeschooled children typically have richer social lives than their schooled peers, because their social time isn't limited to 30 children of the same age in the same postcode. Homeschool groups, sports clubs, music lessons, community activities, and simply being out in the real world provide socialisation that's broader, more natural, and more varied than a classroom.

What about gaps?

You'll worry about gaps. Every homeschooling parent does. But here's the thing — school children have gaps too, they're just hidden by the system. A structured curriculum like Brave Wings is designed to cover all core areas across six years, building skills progressively. Follow the programme and the gaps take care of themselves.

The hardest part isn't the teaching. It's the confidence. Trusting that you're enough. Trusting that your child will learn. Trusting the process. That confidence comes with time — and it comes faster than you expect.
